Why Being Home For Break Is The Best

By Leah Matchett on December 1, 2014

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not home much. Between school and traveling, I’m lucky if I’m home 2 weeks out of the year. But having just spent a week at home for Thanksgiving break (the longest I’ve been there since summer 2013), I have to admit going home has some definite advantages.

1. A Good Night’s Sleep.

N. a mythical state unknown to college students in which one does not have to wake to go to class.

I know by the time I get to Thanksgiving break I’m over caffeinated and sleep deprived with papers piled up like mountains ready to tip over. And one of the most amazing things about break is the simple ability to sleep for 9, 10, 15 hours at a time. All of a sudden you remember what its like not to be tired or sick or strung out on coffee. And it’s fantastic

2. Free Food

This one is kind of a no brainer. As a college student, the majority of my budget goes to groceries. I try and buy as much as possible as cheaply as possible, which leads to some pretty interesting purchases (and is why I have a 4lb bag of Lentils on my counter).

When going home, not only is the food free, but it’s also good food, and you don’t even have to cook it. For students over 21, this extends to your parents’ booze as well.

3. Parents

Despite what I thought when I was 13, my parents are actually really cool people with some incredible life experience. One of my favorite parts of break is simply hanging out with them. From bouncing ideas off of them to seeing what their views on current events are… the older I get the cooler they are.

4. Old Friends

Sometimes it’s great to sit down and catch up with people from high school. You can subtly compete over whose life is more awesome, who’s doing more, etc. Even better: they make coming back to campus and your friends here all the better.

All in all, there are some fantastic things about going home. As a (mostly) judgment free area in which to recuperate from the stress and overindulgences of campus, it’s hard to beat. That being said, a week is just about the limit, and the perfect time to start longing to come back to school.
